Position: Archives Curator

Department: Library and Information Science

Reports to: Head Librarian

Summary:
The Archives Curator is responsible for managing and preserving archival materials within the Library and Information Science department. The incumbent will oversee all aspects of archival collections, including acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and access to archival materials. The Archives Curator will ensure that records are organized and maintained in compliance with industry standards and best practices. This role requires strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, and description of archival collections.
2. Evaluate and select archival materials for acquisition, ensuring they align with the department's collection development goals and policies.
3. Arrange and describe archival collections according to established standards, including creating finding aids, inventories, and catalog records.
4. Preserve and protect archival materials through appropriate storage, handling, and conservation methods.
5. Collaborate with other librarians and departments to provide access to archival collections, including assisting researchers, students, and faculty in locating and utilizing materials.
6. Conduct research and provide subject expertise to support the interpretation and promotion of archival collections.
7. Stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in archival management and implement necessary changes to improve processes.
8. Train and supervise staff and volunteers involved in archival activities, ensuring adherence to established procedures.
9. Collaborate with external organizations and institutions to promote the library's archival collections and develop partnerships for the acquisition of materials.
10. Maintain accurate records of acquisitions, loans, and deaccessions, and prepare reports as required.
11. Participate in professional development activities and contribute to the advancement of the field through research, publications, and presentations.

Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Archive Studies, or a related field.
2. Minimum of 3 years of experience working with archival collections in a library, museum, or cultural institution setting.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards, such as DACS, EAD, and MARC.
4. Proficiency in archival management software and systems.
5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
7. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
8. Knowledge of preservation and conservation techniques for various types of archival materials.
9. Familiarity with digital preservation and digitization practices is preferred.
10. Demonstrated ability to provide reference services and assist researchers in accessing archival materials.
11. Supervisory experience is desirable.
12. Commitment to professional development and staying updated on emerging trends and practices in the field.
